Not sure of another organization that infuriates me as much or as often as the American Family Association. Unless it’s their “lady” version, One Million Moms. I’m baffled by those who actually give money to these groups. As far as I can figure, they use the money to bankroll watching television and browsing websites. Then, when they find something offensive (like Ellen Degeneres being a spokesperson for J.C. Penney or a network airing a show with gay characters) they email their members to let them know about it and encourage them to call sponsors and boycott advertisers.
Oh, there are also buttons. They makes lots of stickers and buttons that they will sell to their members.
Cue Southern Poverty Law Center. Not familiar with them? In their words:
“The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.
“Our lawsuits have toppled institutional racism in the South, bankrupted some of the nation’s most violent white supremacist groups and won justice for exploited workers, abused prison inmates, disabled children and other victims of discrimination.”
Sounds pretty great, right? Check out this program they helped put together for middle schools, it’s called “Mix It Up At Lunch Day“. From their website:
“In our surveys, students have identified the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. So on one day – October 30 this school year – we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misperceptions can fall away.”
An event designed to help kids learn how to cross social boundaries and learn more about each other, certainly no one would be opposed to this?
So of course, the AFA is opposed to this:
“The Southern Poverty Law Center is using this project to bully-push its gay agenda, and at the same time, intimidate and silence students who have a Biblical view of homosexuality.”
How they got that out of this event is completely beyond logic. I could find NOTHING on the Mix It Up page about homosexuality or religion. Yet they have their followers up in arms, calling their schools and demanding that they do NOT participate in this activity.
The AFA is not a Christian organization. They may insist that they are but their fruit says otherwise. They are the morality police, nothing more. They want a theocracy of their own, very specific brand of legalistic, fundamentalism. Christ is nowhere in the picture.
